Nov 12, 2024

Most homes boast a washing machine, an essential for keeping clothes spick and span.

However, despite their apparent simplicity, many are clueless about the true purpose of each compartment. Now a TikTok user, @savethestudent, with a following of 11,100, has enlightened users on how to maximise their washing machine's potential.

In a viral video, which racked up nearly 3,000 likes and a flurry of comments, he shared a crucial life hack. He said: "In case you're wondering, here's what the three compartments in your washing machine drawer are for..."

He explained: "The first compartment is for pre-washing, which you won't need to use unless you're cleaning some really dirty laundry.

"But if you are using a cycle with a pre-wash, put some washing liquid powder or liquid in here and it'll basically wash your clothes twice."

The man revealed: "The second compartment is the biggie – in every sense. This is the main detergent drawer and it's usually the biggest of the three but it's sometimes labelled with a number 2, if you're not sure.

"Unless you're using a washing machine tablet, you'll need to put some washing powder or liquid in here for every wash you do."

Meanwhile, he concluded: "And finally, there's the fabric conditioner compartment, it's usually pretty easy to spot and it tends to be a different size, shape or colour to the others.

"You only need to use this if you have some conditioner and want to make your clothes softer or smell nicer. And it's as simple as that!"
