Lindemann Metal Recycling recently announced the expansion and development of its Intelligent Data Exchange (InDEx) monitoring and analysis system, designed to improve operational efficiency in the metal recycling industry. The German manufacturing company says its system offers real-time data logging, performance monitoring and analytical insights for its machines.
Developed in partnership with a leading Austrian tech specialist, Lindemann says InDEx provides users with real-time access to detailed performance data from their machines, including shears, shredders and, starting in 2025, balers. By logging and analyzing comprehensive operational data, Lindemann says InDEx gives managers the ability to optimize machine utilization, reduce downtime and improve productivity.

“InDEx takes the guesswork out of machine monitoring,” says Krischan Wolters, manager of product management and development at Lindemann. “It’s not just about troubleshooting from a distance; it’s about converting raw data into meaningful information that can be used to maximize machine output and minimize downtime.”
Unlike traditional manual methods of performance tracking that rely on paperwork, Lindemann says InDEx collects and processes data automatically from the Siemens S7 PLCs fitted on Lindemann machines. Data then are sent to a secure, cloud-based server where users can access and analyze performance metrics with any web browser or mobile device. Whether onsite or remotely, yard managers can monitor machine usage, track downtime causes and compare operator performance.
Features of InDEx include:
Lindemann says InDEx is available as an option on all of its new machines and can be retrofitted to existing equipment with a straightforward installation process. The system is designed for scalability and soon will support additional machine features, including artificial intelligence- (AI-) based enhancements. Users can extend their InDEx license annually after an initial installation and two-year subscription period.
“With InDEx, we’re providing a solution that empowers customers to enhance their operations in a truly measurable way,” Wolters says. “By identifying bottlenecks and reducing downtime, operators can increase production output and see a rapid return on investment.”
