{KXLG – South Dakota} A field fire on Saturday afternoon resulted in considerable damage to a tractor and baler, estimated to be over $30,000.
According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, the fire occurred around 2:37 p.m. near 468th Avenue and 216th Street. The John Deere 4440 tractor operator with a John Deere 568 round baler noticed smoke coming from the baler while baling hay. Despite attempts to disconnect the baler, the fire spread rapidly, rendering the tractor and baler inoperable.
Fire crews from Brookings and Volga responded and successfully extinguished the flames. However, the tractor and baler were heavily damaged, with an estimated loss of approximately $30,600.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
