I'm a cleaning expert — you use too much laundry detergent

Nov 08, 2024

Less is more.

A cleaning expert revealed that people are using more laundry detergent than necessary to get through their loads.

Pros from Appliance Doctors claim the measuring cup provided with your liquid laundry detergent is nearly 10 times larger than what’s actually needed.

“This is just another tactic used by soap companies to get you to spend more on their products,” they said.

The cleaning fanatics recommend two teaspoons of liquid detergent or two tablespoons of powdered detergent, which are just the right amount for your washing machine.

“It might not look like a lot in the dispenser, but trust us, this is how much detergent you really need for a standard load of clothing,” the experts at Appliance Doctors shared.

Meanwhile, the cleaning gurus admit that even if your clothes are dirtier than usual, more soap isn’t needed.

“Spot-treating stains and pre-soaking your load of laundry is a more effective way of cleaning heavily soiled clothes,” they said.

Redditors online tried the detergent hack for themselves to see if it would get the job done.

“Reducing how much laundry detergent I use has made a huge difference. I heard you only need a tablespoon or two of detergent, and I was like, ‘No way, that’s gross.’ I would use caps full of detergent,” a Reddit user confessed online. “Well, I’ve become more frugal and decided to give it a shot.”

“My clothes feel so clean and comfortable,” said another user about their experience. “They are soft, smell fresh, and I don’t have to spend almost $39 on laundry detergent every couple of weeks.”

Despite trying to keep your clothes fresh and clean, a Redditor discovered that excessive detergent is shortening the lifespan of their washing machine.

“I had to have my washing machine serviced and the repair guy told us to use one teaspoon of soap. I was shocked! He said the machines wash better with less but also, using the amount recommended on the bottles will shorten the lifespan of the machine as well.”

Some people avoid the mishap with their upgraded washing machines, which have high-tech features that measure the detergent for them.

“We have the load and go washer, so it weighs the clothes and dispenses the detergent for me and it’s awesome we use way less with good results,” one person commented.
